What is NMVTIS?
NMVTIS is a federal database established under the Anti Car Theft Act of 1992 and administered by the U.S. Department of Justice. It protects consumers from title fraud and unsafe vehicles.
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is a federal consumer protection database that provides information about a vehicle's title history, current title brand, odometer reading, and whether the vehicle has been reported as salvage, junked, or otherwise branded by states, insurance companies, and auto recyclers.
Federal law requires that all junk and salvage yards, insurance carriers, and state DMVs report title and brand information to NMVTIS. This information is then made available to consumers through approved data providers like Vehicle Record Check.
Our Approved Provider Status
Vehicle Record Check is an approved NMVTIS data provider authorized by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to access and distribute NMVTIS data to consumers for vehicle history purposes.

NMVTIS Data Sources

- Insurance Carriers: Companies report vehicles declared as total loss (totaled).
- Junk and Salvage Yards: Must report vehicles acquired for dismantling, recycling, or parts.
- Auto Recyclers: Required to report vehicles acquired for the purpose of crushing or recycling.
What NMVTIS Data is Included
When you purchase a Vehicle Record Check report, the NMVTIS component includes:
- Title Brand History: Salvage, rebuilt, junk, flood, fire, lemon law, and other title brands.
- Total Loss Information: Whether the vehicle was ever declared a total loss by an insurance company.
- Odometer Readings: Last reported mileage to detect potential rollback fraud.
- State of Title Issuance: Which state(s) have issued titles for the vehicle.
- Junk/Salvage Yard Records: Whether the vehicle was reported by a salvage or junk facility.
NMVTIS Limitations
While NMVTIS is a comprehensive federal database, it is not all-inclusive. Some information may not be immediately available or may not have been reported by the required parties.
- Not all accidents or damage events are required to be reported to NMVTIS.
- There may be a time lag between when an event occurs and when it appears in the database.
- Some older vehicles may have limited data due to records predating NMVTIS requirements.
- NMVTIS data does not include all service records, ownership history, or recall information — these are sourced separately.
